permlink Movable Type trouble

Looks like comments spontaneously broke a few weeks ago, with the error "Statement has no result columns to bind (perhaps you need to successfully call execute first) at ...". (I hadn't changed anything, though it's possible that Pair has upgraded the Perl version on the server.)

Decided to try & go into MovableType admin area and turn off my newest plugin (Comment Challenge), but just trying to open the Plugin Manager gave me a similar database error(!).

Thought maybe some file permissions had been changed behind my back, but re-chmod-ing the whole /plugins directory had no effect on the error.

Running mt-check.cgi showed no trouble.

Poked around, found a thread on 6A's forums about similar errors people are getting with MT4 (whereas I'm still on MT 3.34 -- tomorrow's errors, today!), decided to Simplify and just move the CC plugin out. And, that didn't fix it.

More trial & error resulted in moving out ALL plugins (bringing any plugin back in reintroduces the error), and now at least I can run the Plugin Manager again without it crashing, but it has nothing to manage.

So it doesn't seem like the CC plugin's fault, it's a wider problem. And comments are open again for now, only because I had to take out the thing that prevents spam. So spam comments may return until I have a chance to get back & try some more futile gestures.

Sigh. Software.

I'm on MT4 now and everything's working peachy keen *except* that sometimes, when I try and log in, it thinks that I haven't upgraded to MT4 and wants to run mt-upgrade.cgi again. I do so, and it doesn't see to hurt anything, but my feeling is that once I ran mt-upgrade, I could remove it from my site, which I did, but then I couldn't log in. It's not quite ready for prime time, but it was better than MT3.3.
