permlink Hurricane categories

Weather.com is predicting winds up to 50 mph in my zip code from Hurricane Isabel.

According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, that's not so bad; less than Category One strength even:
Category One Hurricane:
Winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Storm surge generally 4-5 ft above normal. No real damage to building structures. Damage primarily to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees. Some damage to poorly constructed signs. Also, some coastal road flooding and minor pier damage.
Hopefully the weather site is right, though local media is also mentioning 'possible tornadic activity', which is rather less reassuring. permlink

I took the opportunity to move the database from BerkeleyDB to MySQL, so maybe it'll speed up the interface for me. (You won't see any difference.)

To bed.

Oh, and Apple finally brought out the new Powerbooks.

I've had my eye on the 12-inch, but the new version doesn't offer much over the last iteration; if you're looking at the 12-inch, go to the Apple Store's Special Deals section and contemplate the refurbished 867MHz 12-inch for $1199 vs. the $1599 list price of the new one. While supplies last... permlink
