Sum of All FearsSaw Sum of All Fears: 5 out of 10. Wait for the DVD.Overdone, over-soundtracked (BAM! BAM!), just about every joke telegraphed, ridiculous shots of Affleck walking among flaming stuff. The subject matter is dramatic enough, you don't have to keep using hysterical sound cues, that just breaks the flow. Through the middle I wanted to say back to the filmmakers, "It's just one nuclear bomb, folks. Chill." But there were a few smart scenes, a couple of clever bits and Affleck did fine. Liev Schreiber is fun; I could watch a film about his character. Liked the Russian characters too. Good enough to watch, but not good enough to recommend shelling out theater-ticket money on. 1 comment(s) Well, I liked it. But then, I am a closet Clancy fan (even though he is a right-wing-wacko he can spin a good yarn) and was in the mood for an action flick. Affleck usually does less than nothing for me, but he was alright in this film. I would give it a 6.5. Yes, some of the stuff was contrived (not to mention telegraphed by the soaring violins or whatever), but I've read enough of Clancy's stuff to know that stuff just doesn't seem quite as contrived in the books themselves. I haven't read Sum, although it's on my short list for summer fiction now.Add a comment... |
