American Idol 2006, week 1 We seem to be a Nielsen family or something like it now, which makes my interest in Idol actually matter on some level.
While I so far have failed to bother at all with most realityshows -- you'd have to pay me to watch any Survivor, Apprentice, or Fear Bachelor variant -- a show where I get to watch some decent amateur singers give it their best is pretty genuinely entertaining (as long as you skip nearly all of the time-wasting crap they pack the shows with, especially the endless results-show recaps).
My favorites of the 24 finalists based on this week's performances, in rough order:
- Taylor Hicks (Medley's already tracked down some already-released material by him; not bad at all)
- Chris Daughtry
- Elliot Yamin
- Paris Bennett
- Kinnik Sky
- Gedeon McKenney
- Mandisa
- Melissa McGhee
And IMHO the luckiest people, who should have gone away this week but didn't, are:
- Brenna Gethers
- Bucky Covington
And just a note on baritone David Radford, who sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love in his apparently unavoidably Sinatra-esque style - Man, Mike Eisenberg outclasses him.
