Quicksilver preview

Apparently the current paperback editions of Cryptonomicon have a sample chapter from Stephenson's next book Quicksilver.

Ooooooooh! Gibson & Stephenson in the same year. *drools* All we need now is for Harlan Ellison to put out a book of all new stories & I could die a happy man.

 Online voting in Canada attacked

Denial-of-service attack messes with Canada's online-voting experiment: Computer vandal delays leadership vote [CBC News via Slashdot]

By the time the problem was resolved, voting was at least 45 minutes behind schedule. Results were not released until just after 4:30 p.m.

Security measures stopped anyone from actually busting through the computer's defensive perimeter and altering results, he added. The only problem was a delay in the voting, Hurd said...

It is the first time "real-time" Internet voting was used in a major Canadian leadership vote, according to organizers.

To be expected, I guess.
